Aaron Rodgers has gone through a lot during his NFL career. If the New York Jets keep him next year and draft a quarterback at the same time, it won't necessarily be a new thing. He experienced something like that when the Green Bay Packers took Jordan Love in 2020, and Rodgers himself went through a similar scenario when he was drafted and the Packers had Brett Favre.

So Rodgers told the media on Wednesday he is ready to be a mentor for an eventual new quarterback, while also wanting to play at a high level to keep the young player on the bench.

"A lot of the play is about performance. Whether we got a guy behind us itching to play or not. When they drafted Jordan [Love], I felt like I was one bad stretch away from being benched and I won MVP a couple of years," Rodgers said. "You gotta prove it every single week through stretches. If they asked me back and they drafted a guy, I would mentor the hell out of him if I was playing. And I would try to play as well as I could to keep him on the bench."

Rodgers had a good relationship with Love. And when he was traded to the New York Jets last season, he showed openness to mentor Zach Wilson.

Future

But before that, it is important to understand what the Jets will do. The new management structure will have to decide if they will want Rodgers or not, and the quarterback have to decide if he wants to keep playing. It will take some time, unless he is released and has to make a quick decision.

"I'm gonna take some time after the year, unless I get released right away," Rodgers added. "But I'll still take some time, whether or not I wanna play. But I'll take some time, get away from it, either way."

Aaron Rodgers is still under contract with the Jets through 2025. He is slated to make $37.5 million, but none of it is guaranteed, and he will be 42 years old by the end of next season.
