Pros:
- Speed: Princely Umanmielen is built to be a speed pass rusher, and that's exactly what he does. His explosiveness off the line is arguably the best in this class, and his ability to torch offensive tackles around the arc is a thing of beauty. He has speed for days, and it makes him a handful for opposing linemen to plan for.
- Bend: Umanmielen has a rare ability to bend around the corner while maintaining his speed with long strides. It's textbook, and it allows him to keep as much of his juice as possible as he bends the corner to get to the quarterback.
- First step: It all starts with the get-off for Umanmielen, who launches out of his stance like a rocket ship, quickly eating up ground against offensive tackles. His primary pass rush is to go around the arc, which is aided by his athletic capacity to generate speed instantly.
- Spin Move: Umanmielen has developed a spin move, which is just not fair. Think about it — offensive tackles have to account for elite speed around the arc, his favorite move, but if they overcommit to the outside, now he can throw a spin move at them to counter and beat them to the inside. It's an unfair combination that has yielded great results.
Cons:
- Power: While his power has improved, it's definitely still a weakness in his game. He has so much speed that he can use it at will, but the ability to convert speed to power in a pass rush move is something that has yet to be developed. The capacity is likely there, and I would expect an NFL coaching staff to work on that with him.
- Run defense: Another area where Umanmielen can improve is his run defense, which ties back to the power comment above. His strength is lacking and it shows on film in his inability to lock off blockers and seal the edge.
Player Evaluation:
Princely Umanmielen is a fairly straightforward evaluation. You know exactly what you're getting — an explosive and athletic pass rusher that thrives in obvious passing situations, but his lack of strength can, at times, show itself to be a concern.
His speed is undeniable, and I would imagine that Umanmielen is going to continue to see his stock rise throughout the pre-draft process. He has accepted his invite to the Reese's Senior Bowl, where he'll have plenty of opportunities to show off his speed rush, and the combine will lead to very promising athletic testing.
Umanmielen is ripe with athleticism and an NFL front office that covets that speed as a pass rusher will fall in love with what he brings to the table. Working on his strength, edge-setting, and speed-to-power moves will be the biggest areas of improvement for the pass rusher at the next level.
Player Comparison:
Brian Burns (New York Giants)
Brian Burns has a couple inches in height on Princely Umanmielen, but in terms of play style, I think Burns is a great comp for the ceiling that Umanmielen has. Burns plays fast, all the time. His speed around the outside is lethal, and his ability to use that speed to set up offensive linemen has developed into a polished art. Umanmielen has the traits to model his game after what Burns has done in the NFL.
