The Oklahoma Sooners lost nearly half of their players in the bowl game that they played on Friday against the Navy Midshipmen, which they lost. The Sooners didn't lose because they were missing so many players, though. They had plenty of reasons to win that game and almost did.
Nonetheless, they have some work to do after the bowl game. That was the last game of the year, and they will officially move on to 2025 now. And that means building up their roster for the 2025 season, one that needs to see some improvements.
The Sooners hadn't had a losing season since 1998 before two years ago. Brent Venables first season. That got a pass because it was his first year. Now, he has had two losing seasons. This next season has to be much, much better. I'd go ahead and guess that Venables may need to win nine games to keep his job.
So, is what he's done so far through recruitment and the transfer portal going to be enough to improve on this year? Definitely not.
"We will have a few more guys that we are focused on and hopefully meet those needs in the first portal window, and if not and we still feel like there are spots that we need to address, we will look at the spring portal," Venables said after the loss to Navy.
The winter portal is done, as of Monday, Dec. 9, 2024, it opened and closed on Dec. 28. The Spring portal is from April 16, 2025, and shutting down on April 25, 2025.
There is plenty of time to improve.
Future of the Sooners arrives as the top player in the transfer portal commits to Oklahoma
A sigh of relief after a massive pickup.
