NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Titans (3-13) lost the Jacksonville Jaguars (4-12) on Sunday by a final score of 20-13, and while such an ugly loss would normally mean bad news for a fanbase, it's nothing but good news for Titans fans right now.

This was one of the most important games the Titans have played in years. Two bad teams and a very winnable for the Titans on the road. But winning this game would have been disastrous for the organization's draft position in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Not only did the Titans lose and jump the Jaguars in the projected draft order, they also got some help from around the NFL on Sunday. It's a late Christmas gift that may have landed Tennessee a franchise quarterback in Shedeur Sanders. Allow me to elaborate…

The New York Giants woke up on Sunday with a 2-13 record and on pace for the first overall pick in the upcoming draft. But that changed in a hurry when Drew Lock threw for 309 yards, with five total touchdowns, including his game-icing TD run with under three minutes left. Ihmir Smith-Marsette brought back opening kickoff of the second half for a 100-yard touchdown. The Giants defeated the Indianapolis Colts by a final score of 45-33.

The Giants improved to 3-13, tying them with the Titans, Patriots, and potentially Browns with one game left to play. Tiebreakers for draft order are always determined by strength of schedule. Teams with a weaker strength of schedule "win" the tiebreaker and are given the better pick in the draft. New York does not currently hold the tiebreaker over New England, Tennessee, or Cleveland.

So what does this mean for Tennessee? What does Shedeur Sanders have to do with anything?

If the current projected draft order holds, the Titans would have the second overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. The only team picking in front of the Titans would be the Patriots, who have Drake Maye and do not need to take a quarterback. In theory, the Patriots could select Travis Hunter with the number one overall pick, therefore leaving both quarterbacks (Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward) on the board for Tennessee.

The Titans are going to be looking for a new franchise quarterback this offseason. That much is obvious. But for the longest time, it seemed improbable that they would actually be in position to get the top guy in the draft.

All that needs to happen now is the Titans need to lose in Week 18 to the Houston Texans.
