The Kansas City Chiefs announced that they have terminated the contract of wide receiver Montrell Washington from the practice squad.

This is the corresponding move to make way for new linebacker Blake Lynch, who the Chiefs signed on Monday morning. With backup linebacker and special teams ace Jack Cochrane going down with an ankle injury, Lynch gives them some needed depth at the position.

It's an unfortunate development for Washington, who had a nice training camp and preseason this past summer. Despite that, he was only activated for one game this season, playing five special teams and five offensive snaps against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 8.

With Hollywood Brown back in the mix for Kansas City at wide receiver and Nikko Remigio doing a stellar job as the primary kickoff/punt return man, Washington became the odd man out. He will definitely be missed by his teammates, especially after he gave his fellow receivers an awesome gift for Christmas.

The Chiefs releasing Washington is also likely a positive sign that Mecole Hardman will be ready to return for the postseason run. Hardman was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury in Week 14. It's possible that he returns for K.C.'s season finale against the Denver Broncos, but we won't know until later in the week.

Washington has spent the better part of the last two years with the Chiefs. He never recorded an offensive stat, but did return nine kicks last season. It's always possible that he ends up back with K.C. at some point. Washington is a speedster and his experience as a return man will bring value to a team somewhere in the league.
