SEC fans have always claimed that football matters more in the south, but the proof is in the pudding that's not true. Rose Bowl ticket prices for Ohio State vs. Oregon have remained high and are outpacing all of their competition.
Overall, ticket demand for the College Football Playoff’s first quarterfinal matchups is significantly lower than the inaugural game round.
The next round of action will take place at traditional New Year’s Six bowl games, starting Tuesday night in Arizona, followed by a trio of games across the country on Wednesday.
As of Monday afternoon, the lowest price for a ticket to the Rose Bowl on major resale platforms was around $200, while the cheapest tickets for the other three matchups were all under $40. In contrast, some ticket prices approached $1,000 during the first round just days before the games.
All remaining CFP games will be exclusively aired on ESPN platforms, following an impressive average viewership of 10.6 million for the first round across ESPN and TNT Sports. Last season, semifinal games at the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl on ESPN averaged 23.2 million viewers.
Although the quarterfinals will have a different atmosphere than the on-campus first-round games, the CFP's unique format could still result in uneven outcomes on the field.
Oregon, Georgia, Boise State, and Arizona State have earned first-round byes due to their conference championships, securing the top four seeds in the playoff.
After all four home teams dominated their lower-seeded opponents in the first round, the new automatic qualifying system of the expanded CFP has positioned two lower seeds as double-digit favorites in the quarterfinals.
Oddsmakers predict that Texas and Penn State, ranked Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, in the final CFP standings, will have convincing wins over Arizona State and Boise State. Boise State, finishing No. 9, and Arizona State, at No. 11, were the third- and fourth-highest ranked conference champions.
In an interesting matchup, No. 1 Oregon is considered a slight underdog against No. 8 Ohio State, while Georgia, missing injured starting quarterback Carson Beck, is slightly favored over Notre Dame.
