On Friday, Rivals.com unveiled their All-Playoff team ahead of the first round of the College Football Playoff and they included a Tennessee Vols defender on their list of the best players in the playoff.
Rivals.com listed Vols sophomore cornerback Jermod McCoy among the top players in the 2024 College Football Playoff.
From Rivals.com: A two-star coming out of Whitehouse, Texas, McCoy was originally committed to Tulane but flipped to Oregon State late in his senior season.
McCoy spent one season in Corvallis where he had seven pass breakups and two interceptions and then transferred to Tennessee where he’s become one of the best cornerbacks in the country. Leading the Vols’ defense that’s not even giving up 14 points per game, McCoy has four INTs and nine pass breakups, both team highs.
McCoy was a bit of an afterthought when he transferred from Oregon State to Tennessee ahead of the 2024 season, but he's proven to be an incredibly important player this season for the Volunteers.
The Texas native, who attended the same high school as Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, started all 12 regular season games for Tennessee in 2024.
McCoy led the Vols with 13 passes defended and he was tied for first in the SEC with four interceptions. According to Pro Football Focus, McCoy's 90.3 coverage grade ranks second in the SEC and fifth in the FBS among cornerbacks.
The former Oregon State defensive back has had a tremendous season for the Vols, but he'll need to play his best game of the season against Ohio State's talented wide receivers if Tennessee is going to advance past the first round of the College Football Playoff.
