Ohio State took step No. 1 down on Saturday in their hopes of playing for a National Championship. The Buckeyes blew out Tennessee, 42-17, in what was an impressive showing from start to finish.
Now, Ohio State will get their highly awaited rematch with the No. 1 Oregon Ducks on Saturday. These teams didn’t get to play in the Big Ten Championship since Ohio State lost to Oregon, however, the stakes are now much higher in the College Football Playoff.
Though the Buckeyes looked great in the first round, ESPN’s Paul Finebaum is still a bit concerned about Ohio State going forward.
“The biggest question I have for Ohio State is which one shows up?” Finebaum asked recently on Sportscenter. “We know what happened that night. Will that same team make the move to Pasadena? If they do then they have a very good chance of beating Oregon because they only lost by one the last time at Oregon.”
Finebaum went on to share a bit more of his worry.
“But I do have serious reservations, as great as that win was. Can this team put two or three wins together in a row? That has been one of the issues for Ohio State all season long.”
These concerns are fair because this is the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff. The road to winning it all has never happened like this, so it is new to everyone. Playing more games makes it tougher to win it all. Questioning whether or not Ohio State can actually do that is fair, especially with the shortcomings they have had at times under head coach Ryan Day.
Ohio State played like perhaps the best team in the country against a solid Vols team. They now need to take out the team that hasn’t lost a game yet this year. The sports books are showing Ohio State as the favorite early, but the game is going to have to actually be played.
Finebaum’s takes sometimes don’t sit well with Ohio State fans at times. However, this one is fair and the loss to Michigan should still be fresh on the mind.
Oddsmakers are already saying how things are going to go for Ohio State when they play Oregon in the College Football Playoff
