The Los Angeles Chargers are shuffling up their roster a bit ahead of their important matchup against the New England Patriots on Saturday, including paving the way for a star to return.
NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that the Chargers have activated the 21-day practice window for running back J.K. Dobbins. They have also placed safety Marcus Maye on injured reserve.
Los Angeles also tinkered with their practice squad on Monday, signing safety Eddie Jackson and releasing running back John Kelly.
Obviously the big news here is Dobbins returning to practice after missing the Chargers' last four games with a knee sprain. Before getting injured, Dobbins had 766 rushing yards on 158 attempts (4.8 yards per carry) and eight touchdowns. He also tallied 28 receptions for 134 yards.
L.A. has sorely missed Dobbins. Before he went down, it ranked 15th in the NFL in rush EPA. In the four weeks that he has missed, the Chargers have ranked 30th in that category during that span. It is unknown if he'll be ready to play against the Patriots this week, but he should at least be available for the postseason, which L.A. is likely heading towards.
As for Maye, he will miss a minimum of four weeks on I.R. The Chargers claimed Maye off of waivers in Week 13 after he was let go by the Miami Dolphins. Maye recorded 12 tackles, two passes defensed, and one interception in four games with L.A. He'll be eligible to return during the divisional round of the playoffs if the Chargers are able to get that far.
Signing Eddie Jackson to the practice squad appears to be insurance for losing Maye. A former first-round pick by the Chicago Bears back in 2017, Jackson is a two-time Pro Bowler and former All-Pro. He appeared in nine games with the Baltimore Ravens this season before being released on November 23, recording 30 tackles, and one pass defensed.
Chargers get left out in the Christmas cold in attempt to add another receiver for Justin Herbert
The Los Angeles Chargers came up short on Monday. You cannot blame them actually, though. It was because they've simply won too many games this season. Chargers tried to claim Diontae Johnson According to Field Yates, Los Angeles put in a claim for veteran wide receiver Diontae Johnson. He was claimed by the Houston Texans, […]
