Tre Hawkins III had his first huge chance of the season with the New York Giants against the New Orleans Saints last week, playing 87% of the defensive snaps. However, it ended up being a costly opportunity.

The NFL fined the former sixth-round pick $5,291 for unnecessary roughness because of a low block in the fourth quarter of the loss. He was the only Giants' player fined this week — 1.09% of the plays in Week 14 ended up in fines around the league.

Tre Hawkins III was the 209th overall pick last year and played significant snaps as a rookie. This year, he has been inactive for most of the season. The cornerback played against the Washington Commanders in Week 2, but only on special teams, and some defensive snaps against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 7.

The game against the Saints was the first in which Hawkins played more than half of the defensive snaps this year — 87% (59). He also played two special teams snaps. And he performed well, including an interception and two passes defended.

While it's tough to see football players, especially young ones, losing money like that for normal plays, at least it goes to a good cause. The fines collected are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation to support legends in need.
