Just when you think the hits will stop coming, a right overhand with 2025 implications hits the Dallas Cowboys straight in the face leading up to Week 15 against the Carolina Panthers.

Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs, who was ruled out earlier on Saturday, is set to miss the remainder of the 2024 regular season as he'll go undergo knee surgery.

The news is obviously a hit to the Cowboys defense and one that will heavily impact tomorrow's matchup considering the team might be forced to push nickel cornerback Jourdan Lewis to the outside. However, with it being a left knee injury, it even raises some concerns about 2025.

After all, knee injuries can always be tricky and this one happened on the same knee Diggs injured in 2023. Fortunately, Todd Archer from ESPN reported the injury is not to Diggs' ACL, which he tore last year. His ACL repair remains intact.

The details of Diggs' injury is still unknown.

Diggs is the fifth Cowboys Pro Bowler that's headed to Injured Reserve. Before him, Dak Prescott, Zack Martin, DaRon Bland, and DeMarcus Lawrence have all spent time on IR this season. Speaking of Bland, the All-Pro cornerback duo only got to play two games together this season, which certainly stings a fan base that was excited to get them both on the field in 2024.

Long term, the news makes cornerback a tricky spot for the 2025 offseason as the Cowboys already lack depth and now Diggs might be somewhat of a question mark. Short term, it poses a big challenge against the Panthers, as Dallas will have a lot to worry about with Adam Thielen, who works primarily out of the slot.

Do the Cowboys remove Lewis from the nickel slot? Or do they ask practice squad elevation Andrew Booth Jr. to cover whoever the Panthers throw at him on the outside? Booth Jr. was benched halfway through Week 4, when he started in place of rookie Caelen Carson, who is also on Injured Reserve.

Either way, Mike Zimmer's defense will have a tough challenge in Charlotte this Sunday.
