Notre Dame football is getting ready for a playoff run, and their first opponent will be the Indiana Hoosiers on Friday, December 20th. When you ask anyone what the biggest reasons are that the Fighting Irish could be poised for a deep playoff push, a potent running game and dynamic defense would be at the very top of the list.
Leading the running game is sophomore sensation Jeremiyah Love, who led the team with 949 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. He did his damage on just 134 carries, a stellar 7.1 yards per carry average. Love also hauled in another 22 receptions for 206 yards and two scores as a receiver as well.
On Friday, Love joined the Jim Rome Show to discuss this Notre Dame team, and his performance. A part of the conversation, the two of them discussed Love’s physical transition this offseason. It’s been a huge difference in his growth as a player.
“I put on about 20 pounds of muscle… I’ve put on very good weight and have handled it really well. I’m still as explosive, maybe even more explosive than I was. I feel like I can take a lot more hits, and give a lot more blows. I’m just more dangerous.”
“I feel like I’m more powerful. I’m way more of a threat going north and south that I was last year. I’m already elusive so putting on the weight, and being able to break more tackles, it just adds more to my game. It allows me to have more options when I’m playing. I can run through somebody’s face. I can jump over you. I can juke you. It adds a little bit more to my bag, and I feel like people see that.”
And dangerous he surely is. There is no questioning the importance of Love to this Irish offense, and how much they will need him down the stretch. His combination of elusiveness, explosiveness, and playmaking ability is something they haven’t had to this level in a long time.
The even crazier part about Love, he’s still only 19 years old. We have not even seen the best version of the St. Louis star yet, but hopefully we will see close to that upside during the playoffs. Love is a vital cog to success down the stretch.
