Ohio State is going to have to win the game up front if they want to hold Tennessee off on Saturday and move on in the College Football Playoff.
Head coach Ryan Day spoke to the media on Monday and revealed that Ohio State would make a change along the offensive line once again before the playoff. Plenty of shuffling has happened to the unit this season with injuries to left tackle Josh Simmons and center Seth McLaughlin.
Now, Ohio State is making another change on the interior of the offensive line. Against the Vols, the Buckeyes plan to rotate their guards. Sophomore Luke Montgomery is expected to receive playing time against Tennessee and has even taken starter reps, Day revealed on Monday. This is a big change potentially and Ohio State can’t afford for it to not work.
The interior of the offensive line was not good enough against a very good Michigan defensive line. That part of the line has to be much better against Tennessee, who does have NFL talent along their defensive line as well. We may see Montgomery enter at left guard and right guard both against Tennessee. Austin Siereveld has been the left guard since Donovan Jackson moved to left tackle, and Tegra Tshabola has held down right guard for most of the season.
As a freshman, Montgomery played in 11 of 13 possible games but hasn’t had a ton of reps this season. Ohio State is obviously taking extra measures to make sure that the offensive line holds up against Tennessee.
It will be a huge moment this weekend for Montgomery, who is entering the biggest game of his life and will have a huge opportunity in front of him with now being set to play. Ohio State hosts the Vols at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday.
