The Michigan Wolverines needed to boost the talent level of their secondary with the number of departures they are set to have following the 2024 season. On Monday, they did just that.

Michigan earned the commitment of the brother duo of Tevis and TJ Metcalf, both defensive backs. The two are cousins of Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf.

TJ, a safety for the Arkansas Razorbacks for the last two seasons, started every game this season. Tevis was a reserve corner for Arkansas, playing just under 200 snaps in 2024, mostly on special teams.

The pair of brothers were Michigan's third and fourth additions out of the transfer portal in this cycle, joining wide receiver Donaven McCulley and offensive tackle Brady Norton. Both have multiple years of eligibility as the Wolverines look to find building blocks on defense.

The Wolverines needed to replenish their secondary heading into 2025. Star cornerback Will Johnson is off to the NFL, while both starting safeties, Quinten Johnson and Makari Paige, are graduating. Rod Moore may still return for next year but will be working off of a major injury, and the Wolverines have little proven depth there behind him.

Michigan won't lose as much at corner beyond Johnson's departure. Zeke Berry and Jyaire Hill will likely return next season, but Aamir Hall will graduate, leaving the CB3 spot outside wide open. Tevis Metcalf could find himself in that rotation or might even start if the staff wants to move Berry back inside to the slot.

Still, Michigan won't want a repeat of their 2024 season. Throughout most of 2024, their passing defense was routinely picked on at multiple spots. They closed out the year strong, but still finished 67th in passing yards allowed.

It's no surprise the Wolverines made such a strong early investment into their secondary.
