Notre Dame football has gained commitments from wide receivers Malachi Fields (Virginia) and Will Pauling (Wisconsin) via the Transfer Portal this week. Those two moves should help to continue guiding an inexperienced wide receiver room for the Irish heading into the 2025 college football season.

One thing that still lacks for Notre Dame is true speed outside. When you break down the two pickups, Fields is a boundary wide receiver who is going to thrive working through contact. Contested catch situations are where he is going to make most of his plays down the field.

Pauling is more a short separator that is going to win with his route running, and his ability to find open space. Although there are rumors that Pauling possesses a lot more speed than what has been highlighted, it just doesn’t pop all the time on film. Pauling is averaging just 10.6 yards per reception in his career between Cincinnati and Wisconsin.

Unless either KK Smith or Cam Williams takes a massive step forward, there should be a big worry about whether the Irish will be able to create some explosive plays in the passing game. It appears that Notre Dame is probably done in the portal at wide receiver, but it’ll be interesting to see if there is some interest if a different type of player is out there.

One very intriguing player who just entered the portal on Friday is former Wake Forest standout Donavon Greene. He is a pass catcher that has contemplated entering in the past, but finally opted to do so. He’s one of the more talented wide receivers who has entered in general.

During the course of his Demon Deacon career, Greene has hauled in 102 receptions for 1,853 yards and 13 touchdowns, as well as another kickoff return for a score. That’s an average of 18.2 yards per reception, which showcases just how much of a big play weapon he can be. At 6-2 and 215 pounds, Greene has also been verified in the 4.4s in the forty-yard dash in the past.

Whether you want to line him up at Z, in the boundary, or even in the slot at times, Greene has big play upside. It could be an interesting fit with Notre Dame should they decide to pursue. He could be a tremendous addition, and a play style they need.
