FOXBOROUGH, Mass – It's no secret that Rhamondre Stevenson has struggled this season with holding onto the ball.
And after his performance in the New England Patriots' loss to the Buffalo Bills, head coach Jerod Mayo didn't rule out possibly starting Antonio Gibson over Stevenson.
He even confirmed that was the case during a pregame appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub.
However, when the Patriots took the field for their first offensive drive, it was Rhamondre Stevenson who was in the huddle instead of Gibson.
And after the game, Mayo didn't help his case.
"That was just a coach’s decision. Coach’s decision," he explained.
One reporter followed it up by asking if something changed from the time he did the interview to the start of the game. Or even if there was a miscommunication.
"I understand your question, Mike. Look, it’s a coach’s decision. So I’ll leave it at that," he responded.
He was given every opportunity to say something different, but instead stuck with the fact that it's a coaching decision… which makes no sense.
And to make matters even worse, the running backs did not have a great day against the Chargers.
Gibson finished the day with a high 12 carries for 63 yards. Meanwhile, Stevenson only had two carries for one year.
The run game was emphasized as a major part of the team at the beginning of the year. They had a poor start, but were able to pick it up as the season has gone on. Yet, this game was a total regression.
It will be interesting to see what Mayo has to say about all this after he has the weekend to rewatch film.
