Despite arguably having the best wide receiver duo in the National Football League, the Minnesota Vikings have struggled with their depth wide receiver positions.
It's not that they aren't talented players, but more so their performances haven't been good enough considering what they are being asked to do. Jalen Nailor does have five touchdowns on the year on his 18 catches but it's the misses that have been the bigger issue.
The other third wide receiver the Vikings have used this year has been Brandon Powell, who might be best known for his offensive pass interference against the Chicago Bears and being injured against the Green Bay Packers, which was the caveat for the muffed punt at the end of the first half.
Vikings can fortify their wide receiver room
When teams are primed to make a playoff run, they often will bring in a veteran or two toward the end of the season to fortify the roster. Sometimes, they get lucky enough to bring in a player who was already with the team.
On Tuesday, the New England Patriots parted ways with wide receiver K.J. Osborn with the hope that he will have a chance to get more playing time.
The Vikings selected Osborn in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft and he earned his way into being the third wide receiver in the 2021 season. His story was one of the best we've seen in Minnesota, as the Vikings didn't see him as a wide receiver when they announced him as a kick returner when they drafted him.
During his time in Minnesota, Osborn caught 158 passes for 1,845 yards and 15 touchdowns and has caught multiple game-winning touchdowns for the Vikings. The Vikings let him go this offseason and he signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Patriots.
Osborn already knows the offense and is a capable wide receiver three, someone that can be counted on in critical situations. Even though the third wide receiver is often the fourth option in most plays the Vikings run, it's still a good option to have available to you.
