Jordan Lee the latest Longhorns freshman to go on scoring binge as Texas recovers from Notre Dame loss
Coach Vic Schaefer interested in Longhorns-Fighting Irish rematch next season for SEC-ACC Challenge
Texas women’s coach Vic Schaefer is adamant that Jordan Lee is more than just a talented basketball player. She's side-eyeing a stethoscope.
“Y’all, she’s really smart,” Schaefer said. “That’s going to be a doctor one day. We may all be going to her at some point in our life.”
At minimum, every doctor better be organized. “I always do highlights for definitions. Pens for key points, that sort of thing,” Lee said. “Then from a day to day, typically I have a weekly calendar with my homework color-coded based on the class.
“And then on the back, I have a sticky note that just has my schedule and that will include call my parents or not.”
The devil’s in the details, whether you’re itching to be a dermatologist or a freshman All-American. Lee diagnosed the symptoms and figured, “I can’t miss forever.” After hitting six threes Sunday night, a new confidence has been unlocked for No. 6 Texas.

Lee was 2-for-13 from 3-point range in Texas’ first eight games. After last Thursday’s Notre Dame loss, Schaefer told Lee to keep shooting. She makes too many in practice for them not to go in eventually. “If you’re not our best 3-point shooter, you’re right up there with ’em. Make shots,” Schaefer told her.
Sunday against James Madison, Lee did just that. All six 3-point shots went in. A shooter who was 15.4% from 3-point range is now hitting 42.1% for the season.
Just like how freshman Justice Carlton found a new confidence with a 30-point outburst in November, Lee is ready to go get more for the Longhorns.

“Some of it was I was overthinking my shot a little bit too much,” Lee said. “When I’m shooting, I am thinking about if my footwork’s right the time, did I catch the ball with my fingers in the seams, all that sort of stuff.”
Again with the details. “Seeing those results is definitely something exciting to build off of going forward,” Lee said.
Too many turnovers vs. Notre Dame
Schaefer still can’t believe the 23 turnovers Texas had in an 80-70 overtime loss to Notre Dame last Thursday in the SEC-ACC Challenge. These were mistakes by his veterans, not his three talented freshmen. All five starters had at least three turnovers each.
Schaefer said the Horns were throwing too many 50-50 balls and some were “really poor decisions.”
“It’s kids trying to make things happen,” Schaefer said. “But sometimes just plain old vanilla is pretty good. I don’t need all the relish and onions on my hot dog. I just need a plain old hot dog sometimes, right?”
Horns-Irish again next season?
Despite the loss in South Bend, Ind., Schaefer said “it’s only fair” for Notre Dame to come down to Texas and play at Moody Center in the 2025 SEC-ACC Challenge.
For a coach struggling to find competitive non-conference home opponents, Schaefer would prefer the ACC’s best over someone from the bottom of the standings.
The full inter-conference schedule is determined by the two league offices. Teams are normally paired off together based on how they finished the previous season and what looks enticing for TV.
“Again, not taking anything from them. Wasn’t our best night,” Schaefer said. “I just think it's only fair. Don’t send me somebody different.”
Horns honoring Harmon, Jones
Prior to Wednesday’s game against Southern, Texas will honor senior Taylor Jones for scoring her 1,500th career point last Thursday. The Horns will also salute senior Rori Harmon for scoring her 1,000th point. She’s now the third person in UT history with 1,000 points and 500 assists.
Also, senior Shay Holle played her 140th career game last Thursday at Notre Dame, setting a new program record for games played in the NCAA era. She’s now at 141 and counting after Sunday’s win over James Madison.
