The Chicago Bears are weeks away from the end of the regular season, which will be when the team's head coaching search really starts gaining momentum.
Team president Kevin Warren and general manager Ryan Poles are expected to lead the search for the team's next head coach after moving on from Matt Eberflus.
When speaking to the media after making the decision, the two revealed the organization will be looking for a "leader of men" who has prior success as a coach to come in to fill the vacant position.
“We need an individual who has extremely high standards,” Warren said. "Who is tough, who is demanding, who is bright, who has attention to detail, who seeks and will win championships, who creates an environment of accountability, who’s creative, who’s intelligent, who’s a decisive decision maker, and who will represent the city of Chicago, all of our fans, this franchise, in a manner that is well deserved.”
The top name in the coaching search right now has to be former New England Patriots' head coach Bill Belichick, who is arguably the greatest head coach in NFL history. After parting ways in New England, Belichick was the finalist for the Atlanta Falcons' position last offseason but ultimately wasn't able to land a coaching position.
Belichick has expressed interest in returning to the coaching world next season, either at the professional or college level. While he fits all the traits the Bears are searching for, this latest coaching update should be a red flag to those inside Chicago's building.
Right now, Belichick is making a strong push to become the next head coach for the University of North Carolina, succeeding former head coach Mack Brown. Belichick is in deep talks with UNC but has a lot of heavy demands before accepting the position.
According to Ollie Connolly of Guardian US, Belichick presented UNC with a 400-page "organizational bible" listing the various demands he wants the university to meet in order to hire him as a head coach. Some demands include salary minimums and the creation of two different staffs, one for coaching and one for recruiting.
Connolly added that Belichick has similar manuals shared for NFL coaching opportunities and he will share those with NFL teams interested in hiring him. Given his history and high-profile, it's hard to see Belichick negotiating and backing away from any of his potential demands.
That could obviously cause some issues when it comes to other interested parties pursing him in the coaching cycle. The whole thing seems like a giant headache and waste of time for one candidate. The Bears should just avoid him completely and focus on other top candidates such as Mike Vrabel, Ben Johnson, among others.
Chicago Bears’ organizational disfunction reportedly could lead to another major shakeup going into the 2025 season
What a mess this has become.
