While some media members like Shannon Sharpe would rather pick apart quarterback Joe Burrow for not being able to overcome the deficiencies of the Cincinnati Bengals, most prominent voices recognize what is happening with the struggling 4-8 team.
Burrow is on track towards his best statistical season since breaking out in 2021. He leads the NFL with 3,337 passing yards and 30 touchdowns with just five interceptions. Somehow he has more interceptions than wins to his name.
By all objective measures, Burrow is not the problem in Cincinnati. Hall of Fame QB and ESPN analyst Troy Aikman made that clear Monday night.
During the "Monday Night Football" matchup between the Cleveland Browns and Denver Broncos, Aikman took some time to back Burrow and calculate in real time why success has not followed his own high-level play.
"You know how much I think of Joe Burrow and I can only imagine the frustration that he's feeling," Aikman said. "Usually if you're a team that's not playing well, it usually coincides with your quarterback not playing well. For him to be having the year that he's had and them not win, it just reflects how poorly the defense has played. He's awfully fun to watch, it's not what anyone would've thought for the Cincinnati Bengals."
There's no other conclusion to be made. Burrow is being Superman on a weekly basis, and his defense consistently lets him down. The Bengals have given up at least 34 points in each of their last three games. That's happened just twice before in franchise history during years in which the defense was equally terrible.
In those same games, Burrow has thrown for 1,093 yards, 10 touchdowns, and just one interception that was tipped twice. Taking any other stance here would be the act of a contrarian, or troll.
Burrow's numbers should continue to rise next week against Aikman's former team. The Dallas Cowboys possess one of the few passing defenses that can compare to the Cincinnati's ineptitude in that department. The Bengals are even 5.5-point road favorites as of Tuesday morning.
Aikman will have the call next Monday night from AT&T Stadium to watch it all unfold.
