Now, New Orleans could go after a recently released Commanders first round pick due to the trade. Washington waived CB Emmanuel Forbes Jr. on Saturday.
Saints & Emmanuel Forbes Jr.
Why would it make sense? Would it make any sense for both sides?
I'd say it would make a ton of sense for both New Orleans and Forbes right now. The Saints are thin at cornerback due to injuries and the Lattimore trade.
Paulson Adebo is out for the season due to a leg injury. Rookie CB Kool-Aid McKinstry has been banged up multiple times this season. Behind them, nothing stands out at the position for New Orleans.
Alontae Taylor has been the most consistent CB for New Orleans this season, but it is a new experience for him as the top cornerback on the roster. He played in the slot for most of the past two seasons, and he is transitioning to the outside.
Veteran journeyman Ugo Amadi is the top option in the slot, and Shemar Jean-Charles is taking plenty of defensive snaps as well. Those aren't names that should prevent you from adding others options deep into the season.
Rico Payton is a another cornerback on the roster who probably deserves more defensive reps. He was a preseason star, but his role h as been limited to almost entirely special teams this year.
If Jean-Charles or Amadi have more issues in the coming weeks, Payton could be another piece to get more time on defense. Forbes would be more competition, alongside Payton for New Orleans' unit.
Regardless, the Saints' secondary depth is underwhelming and will be put to the test over the final handful of matchups. Signing Forbes would provide them some young depth that could play himself into a bigger role by season's end.
For Forbes, he would be joining a roster where there is immediate opportunity to be had if he proves himself in practice. That's big.
New Orleans could, at the least, give him a chance to show why he was a former first round pick. So far in his NFL career, he's seen plenty of struggles. Landing somewhere he can try to shake out of that funk will be at the top of his priorities, undoubtedly.
Lattimore's status in Washington
Not to mention, Lattimore has not suited up for the Commanders since the trade. It has been a "zero" so far for Washington on their end of the deal.
He is also doubtful for their Week 13 game after returning to practice on a limited basis this past week. Washington's secondary has seen more struggles in recent weeks, so they could desperately use a player like him.
As for Forbes, he will probably have a handful of suitors when it comes to the waiver process. We will see if the Saints try to get involved.
