Earlier in the week a big story dropped and the New York Giants and former sixth overall pick Daniel Jones decided to mutually part ways after the Giants benched him. There's been a lot of wondering about where he could wind up. It turns out the Detroit Lions are one of the teams that are very interested per NFL Insider Jordan Schultz.
Jones in Detroit would be a very interesting fit, but there's something about it that really makes sense. Jones is somewhat in his 2020 Jared Goff era where the NFL has given up on him. The Lions have already shown that they can rebuild a player and make them the top version of themselves. Here's a chance to do it again.
Obviously this is Jared Goff's team, but Jones could turn himself into a top backup over the course of the next few years and he could then parlay that into a starting spot somewhere else.
Having a premium backup quarterback has been something that's very important to the Lions and they told us over and over again during the offseason that they didn't feel Hendon Hooker was quite ready for that yet. They told us that all the way to the final day before cut down where they clearly felt Nate Sudfeld was even farther away from being ready. Their stance may still be the same.
This shouldn't affect Hooker's development, it might actually help to have another former starting quarterback around. We'll see if the Lions make this move, but as of right now, we know they're interested.
