Will Levis just gave Titans fans a reason to believe after massive win against the Texans
Don’t call it a comeback…yet.
HOUSTON — Quarterback Will Levis was not perfect in the Tennessee Titans (3-8) 32-27 win against the Houston Texans (7-5) on Sunday. He was, however, good enough to get his team a desperately needed divisional win on the road.
More importantly, Levis showed the promise that he can still have a future in Tennessee.
Will Levis puts on a show against the Houston Texans
Levis has been incrementally building off of each performance since returning to the lineup after a three-week injury absence.
Six explosive pass plays in the last three games is a marked improvement for an offense that has spent much of the season languishing. Three such plays came on the field Sunday at Houston, when Levis hit Nick Westbrook-Ikhine for a 38-yard touchdown in the first quarter, Calvin Ridley for a gain of 63 in the second and tight end Chig Okonkwo took a pass for 70 yards and a score late in the fourth. Levis finished the game against the Texans completing 18 of his 24 attempts for 278 yards passing, the two touchdowns and a Pick 6.
It was largely efficient, and effective which is not something one could say about this Titans quarterback or offense very often.
"It's an accumulation of the last couple weeks," said coach Brian Callahan of Levis' performance. "I thought he played, for the most part, fantastic. Particularly in that first half, he had the one interception for a touchdown, but he kept battling. You throw interceptions sometimes, and to see him come back and fight was great. I really was happy with the way that he played.
Sacks were a problem again, though.
Tennessee allowed seven in the first half alone, but gave up only one in the second. It is both a combination of Levis' proclivity to hold the ball too long and an offensive line unit that is just flatly poor in pass protection. Levis has taken 20 sacks in just the last three weeks alone.
To the quarterback's credit he has still managed to complete 67.9% of his passes for 748 yards, five touchdowns, two interceptions and a passer rating of 107.2.
Beating Houston does not cure all the Titans warts that have caused them to lose eight games prior to today. It does buy them another week of divisional relevancy, no matter how slight.
