NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Titans have been without cornerback Chidobe Awuzie for over three months now. Awuzie last suited up for the Titans in Week 3 against the Green Bay Packers before a groin injury landed him on Injured Reserve.

His absence is significant for Tennessee's defense. Awuzie was not only supposed to be a core member of the 2024 defense, but of the Titans' defense in the future. He was signed to a three-year, $36 million contract in the offseason.

Fortunately, we may get to see Awuzie again before the end of the season. The Titans designated Awuzie to return from IR and opened his 21-day practice window on Wednesday morning.

The 29-year-old veteran corner can now practice with the team and slowly take his place back in the starting defense. Awuzie's return would mean Darrell Baker Jr. moves to the bench. But what would it actually take for the Titans to have Awuzie active on game day?

"Most importantly just be able to get into football shape. He's been doing his conditioning and all the other things that you do outside of it. But just to get on the football field and play, and run, and cut, and do all the things that you gotta do when you're playing football," said Callahan on Wednesday when asked what Awuzie needs to do before he can play in a game. "Hopefully sooner than later, but we'll take this week for sure and see where he's at at the end of the week and go from there."

It doesn't sound like Awuzie is going to be active for Tennessee in Washington this week, but a return against the Jaguars in Week 14 seems very possible. It could be coming at the perfect time for a Titans team that has been trending in the right direction and still has a path to getting back in the AFC South mix.

Dennard Wilson's defense has been impressive for a majority of the season, but the secondary has been one of the more questionable areas. Things should only get better with players like Chidobe Awuzie back in the fold.
