Ohio State will have the opportunity to host a College Football Playoff game for the first time ever in a couple of weeks.

As the No. 8 seed in the bracket, the Buckeyes are going to welcome the No. 9 Tennessee Volunteers to Columbus.

Heading into the game that will be played on Dec. 21 in Columbus at 8 p.m. ET, Vols head coach Josh Heupel has a lot of praise for Ohio State’s Ryan Day.

“Have not had an opportunity to cross paths with him very much. Great respect for what he’s done in his coaching career and what he’s done there at Ohio State,” Heupel said on Sunday. “The success that they’ve had year in and year out, I have a great appreciation for how he’s done it and what he’s accomplished there.”

Heupel has been at Tennessee since 2021 after serving as a head coach at UCF for a couple of years. Overall, Heupel has a 65-22 record. Day sits at 66-10 as a head coach himself. Since arriving in Knoxville, Heupel has done some good things with the Vols, even earning SEC Coach of the Year in 2022.

Ohio State opened as -7 favorites at home over the Vols, where it is expected to be a cold one. The Buckeyes’ late-season loss to Michigan stopped them from having a chance at a Big Ten Championship and a higher seed.

“When you get into the postseason, and you’re getting into a game like this, you got to do the ordinary things at a really high level. You have to do things consistently for four quarters. It’s not about some magical play that’s gonna be the difference in the football game. It’s about the fundamentals, technique, eye discipline, and playing within the structure of what you’re doing in all three phases of the game,” Heupel stated.

The winner of the game will get a matchup with Oregon, which would be a great opportunity for Ohio State to deliver their getback.
