Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski made it known that one Pro Bowl defender would be out against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 9 and it is up in the air for the status of another.
Linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah will not be suiting up against the Chargers. In the third quarter of last week’s win over the Baltimore Ravens, Owusu-Koramoah took the brunt of a scary collision and ended up being immobilized and taken to a Cleveland hospital.
Owusu-Koramoah spent the night in the hospital for precautionary reasons and is out for at least one game with a neck injury. Cornerback Denzel Ward on the other hand suffered his sixth concussion of his NFL career against the Ravens.
Ward did not practice on Wednesday and it is being called a ‘day-to-day’ injury. It is unknown whether or not Ward will be able to go against the Justin Herbert-led Charters. The former Buckeye is having an All-Pro caliber season and leads the NFL in passes defended (12).
With Owusu-Koramoah out against the Chargers, Cleveland will turn to second-year linebacker Mohamoud Diabate to fill his role. Diabate is a former undrafted free agent who has really good range as a linebacker and is a young player can depend on. Diabate made nine total tackles against the Ravens and has played 54 percent of the team’s defensive snaps this year.
If Ward is unable to go, the Browns could see more of cornerback Greg Newsome II on the boundary, and second-year cornerback Cam Mitchell would work into the mid as well.
Additional players that did not practice are guard Joel Bitonio (foot) and linebacker Jordan Hicks (elbow, triceps).
Cleveland hosts the 4-3 Jim Harbaugh-led Chargers at 1 p.m. at Huntington Bank Field. When doing so, they could be down two Pro Bowl defenders.
Browns Pro Bowler is among the players ‘most likely’ to be traded ahead of the NFL trade deadline
Cleveland could move on from the pass rusher.
