Michigan might have lost 38-17 to Oregon on Saturday, but their star tight end Colston Loveland had yet another monstrous performance as one of the lone bright spots for the Wolverines. Loveland caught seven receptions for 112 yards on the day as Michigan only managed 165 total passing yards in the game.
After the game, quarterback Davis Warren was asked about Loveland, and he didn't hold back about how special his star tight end truly is:
"Yeah, Colston [Loveland] is a stud. He's everything you want in a tight end. He does everything right. He does everything right during practice, during the week. Practices hard. Lifts hard. He knows what he's got to do on every snap. Never a doubt. And he's someone we all can learn from. Coach [Kirk] Campbell did a great job calling plays for him, and he did a great job getting open. And they weren't covering him, and I was going to hit him. He was incredible for us today and I'm just really proud of the way that guy fights. There's no quit in him. I know I can rely on him…He's a Michigan man and loves his team. He's a true leader on the offense."
Just a perfect summation of what makes Colston Loveland so special. There's not a single thing he doesn't do well on the football field, and it makes sense. When a leader who practices hard, lifts hard, and prepares in such a way that he always knows exactly what he needs to do on every snap is on your team, Davis Warren understands that you just have to target a guy like that.
Despite getting behind early to Oregon, Loveland was relentless all game long. His forceful stiff arm near the end of the first half was a statement play, throwing the defender to the ground, adding another 20+ yards after the catch.
Then when Michigan needed some momentum to kick off the second half, Loveland stepped up with another huge play of 20+ yards on a post route downfield (as you can see in the post below). Loveland clearly has the strength to add yardage after the catch, and speed to burn defenders finding open space with ease.
Michigan's preseason aspirations may be long gone now, but with three games remaining head coach Sherrone Moore and a handful of the players available in post-game interviews made it clear. Their focus is singular and has not changed. The goal is to win. And as Davis Warren went on to talk through with the media on Saturday, it just has to come down to the next play, the next practice rep, the next little detail so that Michigan can pull off a win. And if the team follows Colston Loveland's example? It seems they'll likely be better off.
Michigan now faces an elite Indiana Hoosiers offense next week that has never trailed in a single game all season long. Then they host Northwestern. And then the Wolverines finish the season playing Ohio State. If Michigan is going to have a shot in any of those three games it seems Warren knows he'll have to continue leaning on future first round pick Colston Loveland at tight end.
