FOXBOROUGH, Mass – It's no secret that the biggest struggle on the offensive side of the ball has been the run game.
And that's really not good considering the New England Patriots made it clear that this was going to be a huge part of their identity this season.
Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson are determined to show everyone what they can do, and Sunday's game against the Jets is the perfect opportunity.
"We know we got to be physical in front, control the line of scrimmage," Stevenson told A to Z Sports. "That's what we're trying to get back to."
While football is such a demanding sport, physicality is something that can differ from week to week.
"Once you're on the floor and things are going well, you don't have to be as physical all the time. You can open up. You can try different things. You get in the flow of things," Gibson explained. "But when things are getting like this, your backs agains the wall. Sometimes you just got to go down and let them know. Just got to be physical.
"And that's where we are right now. Our backs are against the wall. We just got to go out there and punch them in the face."
So how would Stevenson and the other running backs go about improving their physicality?
"Just putting the emphasis on it. Just knowing what we got to do. Just emphasize like up front, just emphasizing double teams, emphasizing the running backs getting downhill, just one cut and go basically," Stevenson added. "Just an emphasis on just being physical."
And Gibson also said that he has no doubt this running back room has what it takes to fight through the adversity.
However, it's not just the running backs that need to succeed for the run game to get going. It's also the offensive line, who is responsible for blocking and creating gaps for the players to run through.
This has been a bit of a sore spot for the team this year, going into their eighth straight game with their eighth different combination. That makes it hard to build cohesion.
But Stevenson stressed that they have worked hard together in practice.
"It's been good. I feel like we get along. We get together a lot and go over the plays," he explained. "I think we're well prepared this week and we know exactly what we're trying to do. So should be a good one."
"It's just getting back to our identity," he added. "Controlling the line of scrimmage and going out there and having, I will want it to be out best game on the ground."
A to Z Sports final question for both of the running backs was easy: what's you message to fans about the run game?
"Be excited for it," Stevenson simply said.
"Just expect us to run hard," Gibson responded. "Do what we have been doing, but just a different level of physicality. We hope y'all see that."
