The New England Patriots were able to win a game after losing the most important player on the roster.
In the first half, rookie quarterback Drake Maye exited the game with a concussion, and Jacoby Brissett was sent in to replace him.
Brissett was able to lead the offense down the field. And because of that, the Patriots were able to come out on top, beating the Jets 25-22.
So because of this, Brissett deserves his flowers considering how crappy this situation was.
Maye has been the bright spot during an otherwise horrible season for New England. So when he went down, Brissett knew that he was entering a game that nobody ever wanted to see him play in.
Yet he did it with grace and was key to the team's win.
"He’ll be out for the remainder of this game," head coach Jerod Mayo told the CBS broadcast at halftime. "Just like I told the guys at the beginning of the game, it’s that 'next-man up' mentality no matter what position you play.
"We need Jacoby to take us to the promised land.”
And that he did.
He utilized the tight ends and fed the ball to Rhamondre Stevenson.
Brissett finished the day going 15-for-24 for 132 passing yards.
And he capped it off with a game-winning drive after the defense allowed the Jets to go 70 yards in 10 plays for the go-ahead touchdown. However, they did come up with a stop on the two-point conversion, making it a five point game rather than seven.
So when it was his time to shine, Brissett did.
He got the Patriots down the field, which included a 14-yard run on 3rd down. And then he hit Kayshon Boutte for 34 yards, putting the Patriots on the Jets nine-yard line.
That was Brissett's best throw of the entire season.
He followed it up with a pass to Boutte to put the ball on the one-yard line, followed by a touchdown run by Stevenson to put the Patriots ahead. Brissett finished it off with a throw to Stevenson for a successful two-point conversion.
Now we're not saying that the team should be starting Brissett over Maye going forward. That's not the case at all.
But considering these tough circumstances that forced him to enter the game, he did his part.
And because of that, the Patriots got their second win of the season. The six game losing streak has officially been snapped.
Fans should be thanking Brissett for finishing this game off.
We'll see what happens with Maye throughout the week, but it's possible that Brissett is out there next Sunday against the Titans.
