The San Francisco 49ers have for the second straight week been forced into a move at the kicker position.
Having seen Matthew Wright, stand-in for the injured Jake Moody, suffer a dislocated shoulder making a tackle on a kickoff return in the fourth quarter of last Thursday's win over the Seattle Seahawks.
It is believed that Wright should be healthy enough to kick in Sunday's Super Bowl rematch with the Kansas City Chiefs.
But Wright did not take part in Monday's bonus practice and the 49ers clearly needed an insurance policy at the position.
However, the insurance policy they have opted for is a highly questionable one.
The 49ers, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, are signing Anders Carlson to their practice squad.
Carlson is well known to 49ers fans for playing a crucial role in San Francisco's comeback win over the Green Bay Packers in last season's Divisional Round playoff game.
He missed a 41-yard field goal with 6:21 remaining in the fourth quarter that would have given the Packers 24-17 lead. San Francisco drove down to take a decisive lead on the subsequent drive.
That was just one of a catalogue of misses from Carlson for the Packers last season.
Indeed, Carlson missed six field goals and five extra points in the regular season and then a missed a point after in the Wild Card round prior to his critical failed attempt in the Levi's Stadium rain.
In Wright, the 49ers found a reliable stand-in who went three for three on field goals and three for three on extra points in the win in Seattle. Carlson's record from his rookie year in 2023 suggests he is anything but dependable.
The hope will be that Wright can indeed kick against the Chiefs. However, if the 49ers are forced to elevate Carlson this week, then they will be playing with fire in what could be another extremely close game with the Chiefs. Should that game come down to the leg of Carlson, 49ers fans would have every right to be very nervous.
