The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers are set for a rematch of Super Bowl LVIII during Week 7 of the 2024 NFL season.

The last time these two teams faced off, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs came away with a 25-22 walk-off win and their second consecutive Super Bowl title. When kickoff happens on Sunday afternoon, this game will share a unique similarity with the Super Bowl that is rarely seen in that particular timeslot.

The Chiefs-49ers game is set to be nationally televised on FOX. Typically, the NFL has a pair of games competing against each other on Sunday afternoons across the CBS and FOX networks. This week, the Chiefs-49ers is the lone game during the 3:25 p.m. CT slot on FOX, while CBS will have Panthers at Commanders and Raiders at Rams kicking off at 3:05 p.m. CT.

It's the first time an afternoon game has been nationally televised this season. This particular broadcasting quirk hasn't happened since Week 15 of the 2023 NFL season when the Bills and Cowboys faced off. This team is no stranger to being in the spotlight, but this is uncommon and makes for another nationally televised game for Kansas City on top of a schedule packed with prime-time games.

Why exactly are the Chiefs and 49ers getting put on national television? Well, the NFL is doing its part in creating hype for the Super Bowl rematch, but it also has to do with the number of games happening in unique time slots this week. There's one game on Thursday night, a game between the Patriots and Jaguars in London on Sunday morning, your typical Sunday night game, and a doubleheader on Monday night. Then consider that the Cowboys and Bears are both on the bye week.

Tom Brady gets to call his first Chiefs game under new restrictions

Speaking of unique broadcasting situations, Tom Brady and Kevin Burkhardt will be in the booth on the call for this game. It's the first time this season that Brady will call a game for Kansas City in his new role with FOX. It also comes during the same week that the NFL has levied new restrictions on the former NFL quarterback after he became a Las Vegas Raiders minority owner

Some of those restrictions seem like it'll make his job rather difficult. Brady is not permitted to be in another team's facility, he's not permitted to witness practice, he's not allowed to attend broadcast production meetings, he's prohibited from publicly criticizing referees or other NFL teams, he's subject to the NFL's gambling policy, and he's subject to the NFL's anti-tampering policy.

“We certainly talked about the subject of him (former NFL QB Tom Brady) being an owner as well as a broadcaster," Chiefs CEO and Chairman Clark Hunt said on Wednesday. "The commissioner – after consulting with many owners – decided that the right step to take was to limit his participation in the production meetings and that was enough to get everybody comfortable with the dual roles. It did pass unanimously with everybody yesterday, so I think everybody felt very comfortable with that.”

We'll see how smoothly it goes this week and if there are any slip-ups. I suspect criticizing referees and NFL teams will be the area that eventually needs clearer guidelines from the league.
