The Notre Dame offense is coming off of a stellar performance against the Stanford Cardinal last week, winning 49-7 and finally getting the passing attack going. Now they head into their next challenge against Georgia Tech, who brings more opportunity, but a much larger challenge. The Irish will need some real answers on Saturday.
Here are the keys to victory for this Irish squad against true Yellow Jackets. If they accomplish them, then this Notre Dame offense has a chance to be stellar in Mercedes Benz Stadium. They will need to be on their game to win decisively.
Let Riley Leonard cook
For the second straight week, Notre Dame is taking on an underwhelming pass defense. We saw Leonard have a lot of success last weekend against Stanford, throwing for 229 yards and three touchdowns in just three quarters of action. That needs to continue against the Yellow Jackets. Leonard’s ability as a true dual threat quarterback could be a lot to handle.
Get the linebackers in space
Kyle Efford is Georgia Tech’s best defensive player, and has made a ton of tackles this season. He leads the team with 52 total tackles in seven games, and has made a lot of plays. For as good as he is between the tackles, Efford is not a guy you want working out in space much. The Irish offense must do a good job to stress the linebackers laterally, and take advantage of them in the passing game.
Make plays outside
Georgia Tech is good against the run on the second level, and has good safeties including standout Clayton Powell-Lee. The middle of the field will not be the most advantageous place to attack consistently. For the most possible Notre Dame success, getting to the edge and challenging the cornerbacks outside the numbers leave some opportunity. Players like Beaux Collins and Kris Mitchell must win outside in the passing game.
