HARROW ON THE HILL, England – Throughout the first two days of practice, a key member of the New England Patriots offense has been missing.
Rhamondre Stevenson was inactive in Sunday's Week 6 loss to the Houston Texans. And then ahead of their Week 7 game in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars, he has not been spotted at practice on Wednesday or Thursday.
Head coach Jerod Mayo was asked about the running back's status heading into the weekend, and provided a fairly vague, yet promising update.
"We'll see today," Mayo stated. "He is getting close. He'll probably be a game time decision."
And as expected based on the head coach's comments, Stevenson was out at practice.
The Patriots run game struggled last week, with rookie quarterback Drake Maye finishing with the most yards (92). With Stevenson out, it was Antonio Gibson who stepped into that starting roll. While he had 13 carries, he only finished with 19 yards. And behind him, JaMycal Hasty and Terrell Jennings finished with 12 and 13 rushing yards respectively.
The run game has been emphasized as the main identity of the team to start the season. But when the team switched from Jacoby Brissett to Maye, the passing game saw a serious improvement. And with that, the run game fell off.
But in order for this offense to succeed, they need both the run game and the passing game to be doing well. And so far, that has yet to happen.
So far this season, Stevenson has 77 carries for 356 yards and three touchdowns across five games played.
So let's hope he's out there on Sunday.
