The Green Bay Packers were without two of their three starting wide receivers against the Los Angeles Rams for different reasons. Christian Watson was out because of an ankle injury, and Romeo Doubs was suspended by the team for missing two practices last week — he reportedly was unhappy with his role within the offense.
But the Packers had two positive pieces of news regarding both of them on Wednesday. In the first open practice ahead of the Arizona Cardinals game in week 6, both Watson and Doubs were available.
The Doubs' situation is clear. The receiver was suspended on Saturday, didn't play on Sunday, but had a meeting with head coach Matt LaFleur on Monday. Now that the relationship is back on track, he is ready to play.
For Watson, it's early to know for sure when he will play. The initial report was that Watson had a high-ankle sprain, but exams showed it's a medial sprain. However, it's still an injury serious enough to make him miss the Rams game. He had been listed as doubtful last Friday, which is actually a positive sign, because he had a chance of playing — even if it was a small one. That bodes well for his chances this week.
Tight end Luke Musgrave was active on Sunday for an emergency situation, but he didn't play after all — also because of an ankle injury. The tight end practiced on Wednesday too, but spent some time with a trainer.
Concern
Of the 53 players on the active roster, the only who did not participate was defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt, who also injured his ankle against the Vikings two games ago.
The recovery timeline isn't that long, so the Packers didn't need to place Wyatt on the injured reserve.
With that in mind, he is expected to miss fewer than four games. However, it's trending in the direction that he will miss his second one.
Without Wyatt, the main rotation in the interior of the defensive line for the Packers had Kenny Clark, TJ Slaton, and Karl Brooks. But Colby Wooden, who had been inactive in the previous games, played some snaps as well.
Roster move
The Packers brought cornerback Robert Rochell back to the practice squad. He had been promoted to the 53-man roster on Saturday, as Green Bay took advantage of Romeo Doubs' suspension to use his roster spot.
Rochell was waived on Monday, though, opening the spot once again for Doubs to be back. The series of moves was relevant because Rochell had been elevated for gameday from the practice squad twice, and the season limit is three times.
As Rochell was promoted to the active roster, it doesn't count towards the limit. So now that he's back on the practice squad, he has an extra elevation for the rest of the season — it doesn't reset, though.
