NASHVILLE – Despite an uninspiring 1-3 record to start the season, the Tennessee Titans have legitimate hope at turning things around thanks to their dominant and record-setting defense.

You may be surprised to learn that the Titans defense is both one of the best units in the NFL this year and one of the best units in franchise history.

Yes…you're reading that right, and I have the stats to prove it. Through four games, the 2024 Tennessee Titans' defense is one to remember.

The Titans have allowed an average of 243.8 yards per game this season. That is the best mark in the NFL and the the fourth-best figure in franchise history after four games.

The 1976 Oilers, 1969 Oilers, and 1990 oilers were all better, but playing in an era that saw substantially less offense. The 2000 Tennessee Titans are the only other team in the Titans era to crack the Top 10 (9th best).

This year's Titans have also been elite against the pass. Tennessee is first in passing defense with their opponents passing for an average of just 124.0 net yards per contest. It's the first time that the Titans/Oilers franchise has been first in passing defense through five weeks since 1976.

Titans opponents are averaging 5.7 yards per pass attempt. That is also the best mark in the NFL so far.

No matter how you slice it, the 2024 Titans have all the makings of a really legitimate and scary defense. They have to be better about pressuring the quarterback, getting sacks, and creating turnovers. But Tennessee's ability to stop the run and cover down field should lead to sustainable success.

The additions of L'Jarius Sneed, Quandre Diggs, and others in the secondary are proving to be impactful. But the Titans will soon get a big test against Bills quarterback Josh Allen and some elite offenses in Detroit and Washington.

If the defense keeps this up…things could turn around for the Titans in a hurry.
