The New Orleans Saints are incredibly banged up entering a Monday Night Football showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs. They just added a potential starter in the trenches, via another team's practice squad.
Saints sign veteran center Connor McGovern
Mike Triplett was first on this move by New Orleans.
The Saints are dealing with a plethora of injuries along their offensive line. Adding a former starter makes plenty of sense.
Starting center Erik McCoy is on injured reserve. That was a Pro Bowl loss for the foreseeable future. Lucas Patrick, the top backup option at the position, did not practice on Friday.
Shane Lemieux started in Week 4, but he is also dealing with an injury now. He has not practiced so far this week. Starting guard Cesar Ruiz has not practiced any between this week and last week. It's tough to project him to play on Monday.
McGovern has a chance to come in on a Friday and start on Monday night. He wore number 61 on his first day of practice. McGovern has been in the NFL since 2016.
He played with the Denver Broncos from 2016-2019, spending time under current Saints OL coach John Denton. The veteran coach probably put in a good word for him as New Orleans looked through the free agency/practice squad market on the OL.
He started seven games for the New York Jets in 2023 before suffering a season-ending injury. McGovern is an experienced piece for an offensive line searching for any sort of experience, amid so many injuries.
Keep an eye on the injuries along the OL for New Orleans. Multiple moving pieces going on there, with only the tackles seemingly set in stone for Week 5.
New Orleans waived wide receiver A.T. Perry as the corresponding move for adding McGovern to the active roster.
Saints’ Alvin Kamara proves his commitment to New Orleans with simple statement after loss to Falcons
He bleeds black and gold.
