NASHVILLE – Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce Matthews, a member of the Tennessee Titans Ring of Honor, has turned his back on the organization in a brutal way.
Ahead of the Houston Texans' matchup with the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Matthews narrated a hype video for the organization celebrating the introduction of new "H-Town" uniforms. The uniforms feature "H'Town Blue," a clear play off of the famous "Luv Ya Blue" that is on the Oilers' throwback uniforms Tennessee wears.
"Let me tell you about our color. H-Town's color. H-Town blue has been a part of our DNA since this city was born over a century ago. It means so much that our founders put the color on our city seal," Matthews narrates in the video posted to the Texans' social media accounts.
"Houston…we heard you," he says later, clearly referring to the outrage in the fanbase when the Titans debuted the Oilers throwbacks in 2023.
The Ring of Honor was created in recognition of the 40th season of the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans organization in 1999. The team's late owner Bud Adams Jr. created it to be the official team Hall of Fame. Matthews is one of 18 individuals enshrined in the Ring of Honor and one of only 13 former players.
Matthews was inducted into the Titans' Ring of Honor in 2002. He is also one of only eight players to have his number (74) retired by the franchise.
With as much effort as the Adams family has put in to separate the Titans from the Texans and the city of Houston, Matthews hyping up a division rival feels like a bit of a betrayal to me. Texans fans online are certainly taking the opportunity to troll the Titans and Amy Adams Strunk.
This just feeds into the false narrative that the Houston Texans have anything to do with the history of the Houston Oilers and Tennessee Titans. The franchise Matthews became a legend playing for is located in Nashville. The uniforms he wore belong to the Titans. "H-Town Blue" is not a historic color. It's a brand new idea created by the Texans' organization to rip off some of the history that belongs in Tennessee. What do you think Titans fans?
