The Texas-Oklahoma series has always run in streaks. The Longhorns would win a bunch of games in consecutive fashion, then the Sooners would take over.
Right now, OU has the edge in series momentum having won five of the last six.
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian can’t change more than 100 years of history with one football game. But he can get the Horns back on the right side of it with a win Saturday in the Cotton Bowl.
The Longhorns (5-0, 1-0 SEC) enter the iconic college football battle ranked No. 1 while the Sooners (4-1, 0-1) are ranked 18th.

Facing Oklahoma, Georgia, Vanderbilt sounds like a daunting October gauntlet for No. 2 Texas
UT has an all-time series lead at 63-51-5. The Red River rivalry has also been known as the “Red River Shootout” — at least it was until that name became politically incorrect — and the “Red River Showdown.”
Resale ticket prices on Stubhub were about what you’d expect for Texas-OU. Seats were available anywhere from $400-$1,300 on Sunday.
Sarkisian is 1-2 so far as the Texas head coach. OU won an incredible shootout in 2001 by a 55-48 final. The next year, Texas dominated its way to a 49-0 victory. Then last season, it was a 34-30 nailbiter captured by the Sooners.
Last season, OU quarterback Dillon Gabriel found Nic Anderson for a 3-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds remaining in a battle of unbeaten teams.
“We didn’t play our best football today. Our inability to corral the quarterback … hurt us, especially in the second half,” Sarkisian said afterward. “The promising thing is we know we can play better than we did today. And we will.”
Gabriel is now throwing touchdown passes at Oregon. The Sooners have used both Jackson Arnold and Michael Hawkins Jr. so far this season.
Texas is expected to see injured quarterback Quinn Ewers bounce back from his sprained abdominal injury. Ewers was back practicing with the first-team offense last week, according to Orangebloods. All signs point to him starting against the Sooners. Sarkisian will likely give an update on the quarterback’s status Monday.
If Ewers can’t go full speed, the Horns have full confidence in his backup. Arch Manning has completed 70.5% of his throws for 901 yards and nine touchdowns in essentially 2 1/2 games in Ewers’ place.
