FOXBOROUGH, Mass – With all the injuries the New England Patriots have sustained this season, they needed someone to step up on the defensive side of the ball.
And all eyes were on Keion White.
The defensive end has had a solid start to the season, but in Sunday's loss to the Miami Dolphins, he showed some uncharacteristic sloppiness.
And it resulted in a total of 30 yard for the Dolphins on one specific drive.
When asked about this after the game, head coach Jerod Mayo didn't hold back.
"It comes back to discipline," he told reporters. "Once again, it's all about discipline, it's about execution. I mean, I think those were the right calls."
White was flagged for an illegal horse collar tackle, which cost the team 15 yards. And then on a third down attempt for Miami, Jonathan Jones was able to prevent Jaylen Waddle from getting the ball.
But, it didn't matter because White was called for roughing the passer, giving the Dolphins 15 additional yards and a first down.
In the end, Miami was only able to get a field goal, but these type of plays cannot happen. Especially for a team who is relying so heavily on their defense right now.
So far this season, White has 22 total tackles and four sacks in the first five games. But he has remained very critical about his performance.
But regardless, he wasn't the only one who committed a penalty.
The Patriots finished the day with 12 penalties for 105 yards in the loss.
If a team wants to win a football game, they can't allow that to happen.
Jacoby Brissett's comments after the game said it all.
"Honestly, nothing was good. Penalties taking us backwards," he said. "We're not good enough to do that."
The Patriots held the lead until the fourth quarter when Miami jumped ahead after scoring their first touchdown of the day.
And on both sides of the ball, one thing was very clear.
"I would also say as the game wore on, our fundamentals began to slip, and that can be a combination of things," Mayo said. "We'll watch the film with a critical guy, and we've just got to put a better team out there."
The Patriots have no time to wallow after this disappointing loss, having to turn around a prepare for a dominant Houston Texans team next week.
