Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers remains on track to play Saturday against Oklahoma, and if the game was held Monday, he would start.

“How he was today, I feel good about him going Saturday, but that remains to be seen,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said Monday during his weekly press conference.

Then, the coach immediately followed that up by saying if the game was played today, “He would start.”

Ewers suffered a sprained abdominal injury against UTSA in week three and missed the next two games. Backup Arch Manning took the controls and has now thrown nine touchdown passes in the basic equivalent of 2 1/2 games.

Ewers has completed 73.4% of his passes for 691 yards with eight touchdowns and two interceptions in his 2 1/2 games.

Ewers practiced three days last week and then practiced again Monday, Sarkisian said. The coach made it clear last week he would not be open to installing multiple packages for different quarterbacks in a game.

If Ewers can play, the play-calling will be designed for his skill set. Sarkisian does not want to go back and forth between Ewers and Manning.

“I’ve got respect for a guy who’s the starting quarterback and the rhythm that’s needed to play,” Sarkisian said last Wednesday on the SEC coaches’ teleconference. “So no, that’s not something I've ever entertained.”
