NFL scoreboard watch gives Titans roster hope for a 2024 season turnaround

NASHVILLE – Sometimes in professional sports, it's best to keep your head down and focus on your own problems. When a team is struggling, they need to first look internally and worry about turning things around one game at a time.

"Scoreboard watching" or keeping one eye on the standings is for the fans…but sometimes, it can be the motivation a roster needs to remember they're not out of it.

The Tennessee Titans are not denying the fact that they've been paying attention to the chaos ensuing around the NFL. And with the wide open AFC playoff picture, the Titans know that their 1-3 start to the season is far from a death sentence.

"I think it matters. We put those things up. We're aware of it," said Titans head coach Brian Callahan in Monday's press conference when asked if his team pays attention to scores from other games and the league's standings this early.

While Callahan's week-to-week approach is "narrow" and focused on finding a way to win, looking at the big picture can sometimes be helpful.

"There is a 30,000-foot view that I think helps guys put it in perspective. Yeah, our record is what it is. We're 1-3, but you got a chance to quickly get back in the mix if you can win a divisional game this week," said Callahan. "You see most of the league outside of about three teams is either 3-2 or 2-3 or 2-2. So, it's all jumbled up. You focus so much on your own team and your own process that every now and again though, it does help to get some perspective of what happens around the league and where teams stand, and where your division stands, and where the AFC stands just to show that it's pretty wide open still at this point and lot of things can go a lot of different directions at this juncture in the season."

I find this refreshing to hear a head coach say out loud. So often we hear about "blocking out the noise" or "focused on this week's opponent", but when you start 1-3 and things seem dire for your squad, it's important to remember that most teams around the league are incredibly flawed right now. Brian Callahan, as always, is being relatable.

There are nine teams in the AFC with either 2 or 3 wins. The Titans had an early bye week, but have a chance to get right back in the mix with a win over the Colts. That's not wishful thinking, that's real.

The NFL is a volatile league. You're almost never as bad or as good as you feel after any given Sunday. Things change from week-to-week.

While the start of 2024 has not been ideal for anyone with the Titans organization, things are trending in the right direction. And based one what we've seen around the league, anything can happen still.

If that's enough to inspire the Titans' player, it should absolutely be enough to inspire Titans fans. There's a lot of football left to be played.
