Things have not been easy for Jacoby Brissett this season both on and off the field.
The team is on a three-game losing streak after winning their season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. And many people have put the blame on the veteran quarterback.
So because of that, the outside pressure to start rookie quarterback Drake Maye is bigger than ever. And Brissett is very aware of what is being said.
“Well, one, I don’t control that part of this whole process thing, at all,” Brissett said during a radio interview on WEEI. “Do I hear it? Of course, I’m not deaf.
“I mean like, I’m not blind to the fact that we drafted this guy number three overall. Like, that’s what people feel like they wanna see, you know what I mean? It’s just, I don’t know – I try to just block it out and do my thing, you know?”
So does he find all of this talk disrespectful?
“Yeah, it is. But at the same time, a lot of those people don’t know me … so therefore, I could care less,” he added. “Why waste my time to worry about the people who say those things? I kind of just block it out.”
The Patriots have many issues on offense. So simply swapping out Brissett for Maye will not fix everything.
But head coach Jerod Mayo added fuel to the fire when he admitted something about the quarterback competition during training camp.
"He did outperform Jacoby by the time we got to the end of camp," Mayo said. "What we had to do was, going into the regular season, look at who gives us the best chance to win right now. And so just because you're trending better in a certain way doesn't mean you'll outperform from a holistic standpoint."
And he sent a specific message to fans.
"They want to see the third overall pick play," Mayo mentioned on WEEI on Monday. "And I understand the frustration from the fans, I understand the frustration from you guys in here (media).
"What we’re doing is what we think is best. What I'm doing is what I think is best for the Patriots today and also in the future, and that's how I have to look at these things. You guys look at these things on a week-to-week basis. I think there's a combination of multiple things I have to deal with."
So going forward, Mayo has no plans to make a quarterback change.
"Jacoby is 100% our starter," Mayo said. "He's 100% our starter and that's how we're going to look at this going forward. Hopefully I cleared it up."
But despite all of the outside noise, Brissett is still proving to be a leader at every turn.
“That was the first quarter of our season,” Brissett said. “We got three-quarters of our season left. We’ve got a lot of young guys, so I broke it down to them. We’ve got a whole college season (left) plus a Bowl game left of football.
“Do we want a lot of things to happen a different way? Yeah, of course. We don’t want to sit in this three-game losing slump. But at the end of the day, we gotta pour into the game plan, one game at a time. We can’t look at what should happen, or what shouldn’t happen. We just gotta go out, work, and make things happen. I think this week is all about us and being able to put the past behind us, and have a fresh start to the second quarter of our season.”
