Steelers remain noncommital to Justin Fields as starting QB following latest Russell Wilson update

The Pittsburgh Steelers fell for the first time all year on Sunday, but it wasn't because of QB Justin Fields.

A game that saw him account for 367 yards of total offense and 3 total TDs, Fields was the driving force in the team's late-stage efforts at a comeback

So one would assume that Fields has done enough to solidify himself as the team's starter going forward right?

Not so fast:

Russell Wilson's Participation Level to Increase

"Just met with our training staff and Russ and plotted out our course for his work today," said HC Mike Tomlin on Tuesday. "He'll have another strong workday today. We'll see how he feels in the morning, and we'll let that be our guide in terms of his participation. But it seems like he's in a place where his participation is going to pick up some in terms of a practice setting within a live pocket, if you will. We won't draw too many conclusions, but we'll just start that process, and we'll comb through that day by day, evaluate his ability to move and function and protect himself, and obviously, evaluate his level of productivity. And we'll let that be our guide in terms of whether we get into serious consideration as we push forward toward game time this week."

Presumably, this means that for the first time all season, Russell Wilson may be a full participant in practice as opposed to a limited one. And while some may say that's fine, it's good to have two healthy backups with Russ and Kyle Allen, Mike Tomlin may have some other plans:

"It potentially could, but it has not to this point, said Tomlin when asked if Justin Fileds play has slowed down the process of bringing back Russell Wilson. "The guiding factor for us at this point is the amount of ball that we have in front of us, how early we are in this process. That's probably been one of the significant variables in terms of our approach to his rehabilitation.”

Look, the answer seems simple enough. You play the hot hand until the hand goes cold. And if Fields remains hot, you roll with him until the wheels fall off and sign yourself a potential franchise QB.

But we know Mike Tomlin signed Russell Wilson to be his starting QB. So if Tomlin wants Russell to start, Russell will start.

For now however, Justin Fields gears up for a big game against the Dallas Cowboys.
