Detroit Lions Mailbag: Is Jared Goff about to be more mobile in 2024?

Welcome to another Detroit Lions Mailbag. It's bye week time and that means we sadly don't get to watch Lions football this week. At least there's the Tigers. We got a lot of questions. Let's jump into them.

Goff does seem like he's a little more mobile out there doesn't he? I know he did spend the first part of the summer working with a quarterback guru after the wedding and then had camp right after. Maybe this was something he wanted to add to his game this year. I wouldn't say he's going to run for 100 yards anytime soon, but he can move a little more fluidly than he has in the past.

As far as the Johnson side of things, I think there are definitely some more designed runs in there for Goff this year. I've spotted a handful already, including the one that sealed the win against the Cardinals.

Couple that with him catching a touchdown pass and it feels safe to say that the Lions intend to use Goff in all kinds of different ways

The fix is to get out there into the trade market and see what you can get. The problem is that teams may not want to move on from anyone for another few weeks since it's so early into the year. For me, Haason Reddick seems like a no brainer. The Lions could take advantage of the mess the Jets made and the longer this goes on, the cheaper his next contract is going to be. Plus they are one of the few teams that can actually afford to make the move.

If it's not him, I'd call the other New York team and go after Azeez Ojulari. That kid just needs to be somewhere where he can get on the field. Terrell Williams would be great for him and the Lions have that space to get him out there now.

The other thing is to hope Paschal keeps getting better every week.

Look, Lions fans hate when I just say what I think happened, but I really just think it was an overconfidence thing. I think Holmes felt good about what the Lions had and felt that they didn't need to do much more than get Marcus Davenport.

The addition of DJ Reader is a big help and if everyone was healthy, there might not be any problems. Holmes can't foresee injuries, but he still could have grabbed one more midlevel guy or drafted someone considering Davenport's injury history and that the early beliefs that James Houston might get cut and John Cominsky potentially could too.

With that said, he was totally right to stay away at the trade deadline last year. He was also right to stay away from the guys that went for top dollar this March too. Edge rushers are costing more and more every year.

I thought the safeties did as well as they could without Brian Branch out there. I thought Josh Paschal played a lot better in this game too. Definitely a lot better than I initially thought. After watching the film I realized I was wrong. It'll be interesting to see where things go with him.

As far as Houston goes, I think the Lions simply lost confidence in him. they tried to make him a SAM for three years and he just couldn't get it.

They looked so good didn't they? If we're going to bribe anyone I want to bribe the people that paint the end zone to do all black with blue writing. That was my dream when I learned they were going to make special moves in the stadium for this look. Otherwise everything was perfect.

I think Carlton Davis was the only guy that went down, but that was just for a few plays. The Lions got out of this one clean. Judging from Dan Campbell's comments ahead of the game, it seems like Christian Mahogany should be coming back after the bye. He seemed less positive about Brodric Martin.

I would fully expect to see Frank Ragnow back as well. That guy wanted to play this week and the Lions had to force him to sit this one out. He's a different breed man. Everyone else is going to take some more time.

Branch could have made a really big difference. I'm not saying it's more of a blowout, but I think he's a difference of at least one touchdown. He could helped out with Metcalf.

As far as Bates goes, he's their guy right now. They do have Matt McCrane on the practice squad, but they're in it with Bates. He just needs to keep cleaning things up. As long as they go in, that's all that matters.

Really impressed with him so far. The Lions wanted to keep Josh Reynolds, but were unable to, Patrick looks a lot like Reynolds so far. I know it's only four catches, but three of them were for first downs. I think if they keep moving forward with him, he's going to be a big asset for this team.

We're moving across state to the Detroit area. Please hope for the best for my sanity. I hate moving so much.
