Jones was selected as the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 4. This marks the first time Jones has earned the award this season. It's also the first time any Chiefs player has won a weekly award in 2024, which is a bit hard to believe given their undefeated start.
Against the Chargers in Week 4, Jones recorded four total tackles and two sacks. The performance helped lift the Chiefs to a 4-0 start for the first time since the 2018 NFL season. The timing of Jones’ sacks was key as they came on pivotal third downs, forcing the Chargers into fourth-down situations.
This marks Jones' third career AFC Player of the Week honors. He previously earned awards for AFC Defensive Player of the Week in Week 2 of 2017 and Week 11 of 2021. He now has more weekly awards than any other defensive lineman in franchise history, surpassing players like Neil Smith and Art Still.
Jones' award also puts him in elite company among former Mississippi State Bulldogs. He joins Cowboys QB Dak Prescott and Eagles CB Darius Slay as the only players from their alma mater to win the award three or more times.
Weekly awards are nice, but Jones has bigger goals in mind for 2024. He's eyeing a three-peat with his teammates in Super Bowl LIX. He's quietly making a strong case to become NFL Defensive Player of the Year for the first time. A few more of these weekly awards could certainly help toward that effect.
