When the Tennessee Vols and Arkansas Razorbacks meet at midfield on Saturday night for the coin toss, there will be a couple of former UT players there representing Arkansas.
Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman announced on Wednesday evening that former Vols Doneiko Slaughter and Addison Nichols will be two of the Razorbacks' captains for the game against Tennessee.
Slaughter, a defensive back, and Nichols, an offensive lineman, both transferred from Tennessee after the 2023 season.
Vols head coach Josh Heupel was asked about Slaughter and Nichols on Wednesday during the weekly SEC teleconference.
“That’s the era of college football that we’re in," said Heupel. "Where you have an opportunity to, at times during the season, play guys that were inside of your own program. And those two guys are really good kids. They do things the right way off the field. They compete extremely hard on the field and both of those guys are playing extremely well for Arkansas right now.”
Pittman was also asked about Slaughter and Nichols during the SEC teleconference this week.
“Well, let’s start with Doneiko, we needed a guy who had played in this league and played well in this league at that position," said Pittman. "So we went after him hard once he got into the portal. That was very simple. He’s a mature guy — older than his years of maturity. And I just really liked him once I got a chance to talk to him.
“With Addison, there was a huge need there as well. I knew Addison, I had recruited him out of high school all the way to his freshman or sophomore year when I was at Georgia. I knew his talent level. And again, there was a position, a need. But Addison was a little bit different because I’d known him when I was the offensive line coach at Georgia.”
Tennessee and Arkansas will kick off at 7:30 PM ET on Saturday night in Fayetteville.
The Tennessee Vols might already have the answer to a major question they could face later this year
If the Tennessee Vols' defense continues to perform at a high level, it seems inevitable that defensive coordinator Tim Banks will receive some head coaching offers. It's hard to know whether or not Banks would leave for a head coaching job at this point in his career (we don't know what jobs will be open […]
