The future of Daniel Jones with the New York Giants might be more uncertain than ever. On Monday, one day after the team lost to the Carolina Panthers in Germany, head coach Brian Daboll left the door open to making a change at quarterback.
“We're going to spend a lot of time watching tape and evaluating things,” Daboll said.
It’s not a definitive answer, but the fact that Daboll now seems open to switching the starter at the most valuable position tells you everything you need to know about how they feel with the situation and Jones’ level of play.
Daniel Jones signed a four-year, $160 million extension with the Giants in 2023. The Giants have a potential out after this season.
And money might be a big part of the decision. Jones has an injury guarantee on his deal, and a long-term injury would trigger a $23 million guaranteed base salary by March. If the decision about the future of Jones is made, there's no reason why to keep him on the field.
Against the Panthers in Europe, Daniel Jones completed only 59.5% of his passes, with no touchdowns and two interceptions. It was the third time in the season where Jones had a passer rating below 60.0 (44.3 against the Minnesota Vikings, 57.5 against the Cincinnati Bengals, and 50.5 versus the Panthers). His passer rating for the entire season is 79.4, the second worst of his career after the 2023 season (70.5).
Among 34 qualified quarterbacks, Daniel Jones is 22nd in EPA/CPOE composite in 2024.
“We are evaluating our team at the bye week,” Daboll added.
The New York Giants are 2-8 this season and have lost five games in a row. After the trip to Germany, the team has a bye and returns to the field in Week 12 to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at MetLife Stadium.
Beyond Daniel Jones, the Giants have Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito at quarterback on the 53-man roster. Lock is officially listed as the immediate backup quarterback and presumed starter if the Giants decide to bench Jones.
