Next April, the Browns will finally have a first-round draft pick again after sending the last three to the Houston Texans in the disastrous Deshaun Watson trade.
Cleveland could go multiple different ways with that pick. In our latest mock draft at A to Z Sports, the Browns go in an interesting direction after the top quarterback goes off the board before they can pick.
Cleveland Browns select Michigan CB Will Johnson No. 3 overall
Something about Andrew Berry and picking cornerbacks just goes hand in hand. While Johnson would be a bit of a surprise pick, he would still be a welcomed addition. Johnson is the best cornerback in college football and would immediately give the Browns perhaps the best cornerback room in the league when pairing with Denzel Ward and Martin Emerson Jr.
“Greg Newsome could be trade bait this offseason, and Denzel Ward has battled too many concussions and could be having an unfortunate conversation about his long-term career.” – AJ Schulte, A to Z Sports
Ward has had at least six concussions since in the NFL, as mentioned by AJ above. There is no certain word on how long he will play, but there is a chance his career could be cut short with the head injuries at some point.
Insert Johnson, who has been a terrific college player over the last three years. Johnson has nine interceptions in college and has returned three of them for a touchdown. The All-American level player has only played in six games this season and it is fair to wonder if he is opting out with the team struggles that Michigan has had. There has been no sure word there, but it is something to watch.
Johnson is a 6-foot-2, 202-pound cornerback from Detroit, Michigan. He has a bit of a bigger build than a player like Ward and he should hold up well in the NFL. The ball production sticks out and Johnson has lockdown cornerback written all over him.
While it may not be the biggest need, Johnson would still add a lot of value to the Browns defense that wins with a pass rush and coverage on the back end.
