Welcome to another week of the Detroit Lions Mailbag. I have a question for you guys this time. How many times have you rewatched the Lions vs Texans highlights? What a win. Alright, let's get to your questions.
Ben Johnson probably isn't leaving Detroit. I don't have any insider information on that, I just think I know the guy that we're dealing with here. I think he loves his job where he can call plays and then go home at the end of the night with a much lower stress level.
Some guys just don't want to be a head coach and I can't blame him. If I were Johnson, I'd keep my well paying job in an area my family loves over moving to another city to just potentially be the next young guy who gets fired by an impatient owner.
We see it every year. Team's have no patience. They won't even give their quarterbacks time to be ready, why would they wait on the coaches? Aaron Glenn is the guy that everyone should have their eyes on.
I think that when Melifonwu comes back, you can expect to see the return of the safety blitz for this team. He's really good at doing that. Apart from that, he'll be that third safety and I'm sure the Lions will look to have some more three safety looks. He can defintley unlock some extra things for this already pretty good defense.
He did have a good game on Sunday, but he only played 14 snaps in that game. Sunday's game against the Jaguars is going to answer a lot of questions for us. If the Lions look to play him a lot more in that one, it's a pretty good sign that they don't see his performance against the Texans as a fluke and that he's been getting a lot better behind the scenes.
I don't think so. I think the Lions can defintley afford to do all three. They're already rolling over quite a bit of cap and are expected to have the 10th most cap space in the league this coming offseason per Over The Cap. Couple that with the cap rising again and there's money there for Detroit.
Plus, the reality is this, Onwuzurkie isn't going to get paid a ton based off just one full season. Barnes is good, but he's not top of the market good. Davis will come at a price, but I think the Lions will have enough to do everything they want this March.
The Lions had a pretty hard time running the ball in this game and I felt they did the right thing on the last play. They know they have a guy with a leg and why keep running plays and risking the Texans getting the ball back for one more drive?
Sure, a little closer would have been nice, but in this case if you miss, you know you have a chance to go to overtime and your defense has been playing really well for two quarters. I know Campbell can be aggressive, but there was no need for aggressiveness there.
There's always a chance he comes back and is on the roster, but I would be incredibly shocked if the Lions don't draft a receiver after the way camp went down this summer. They honestly might grab two. This team needs some more depth and while I like Patrick, he's a bit long in the tooth at the moment.
Look for the Lions to get in on a receiver in the first few rounds. Maybe even if the first if someone falls.
They're going to have open up two more spots. The Lions waived Abraham Beauplan on Monday and that brought the roster to 52 players. So two more guys have to go and I'm not totally sure who those guys are going to be right now. I did make a list of candidates' the other day though.
Honestly I think that Kindle Vildor might be the better option to split snaps.
I'm kidding people, calm down. The way the Lions handle rookies sometimes is always interesting. Sometimes they throw them right out into the deep end and then other times they put them in the shallow end and let them swim over to the deep end in the second half of the year.
I think the latter is what is happening with Rakestraw. As we near the end of the season, I would defintley expect to see him a little more and maybe the Lions try to work him in on the inside and outside.
Pressure man. Goff was getting swarmed in this game by a very good defensive line. I don't know if many quarterbacks would have been much better in that moment.
Missing Decker was a big difference for this team. Goff got hit four times in this game and was pressured or hurried eight times. That's a lot.
Carlton Davis has been one of the better cornerbacks in the league lately, here’s what the Lions will have to pay him to keep him this offseason
The Detroit Lions went looking for cornerback help this offseason in an effort to rebuild their secondary and the biggest move they made was to trade a future third-round pick to the Buccaneers in exchange for Carlton Davis. I'll admit, at first glance I wasn't too impressed with this move. As time went on and […]
