To the victor goes the spoils. If No. 3 Texas keeps winning, the Longhorns will most certainly have a huge postseason award haul.

An avalanche of award honors came pouring in Tuesday with multiple players learning they are now semifinalists for some of the biggest individual honors in college football.

Granted, none of this means Texas (8-1, 4-1 SEC) has accomplished anything yet. The Horns must still keep winning to reach the SEC championship game and the College Football Playoff. This recognition could disappear just as fast.

But it’s a sure sign that team success leads to individual accolades, something coach Steve Sarkisian has been preaching since day one.

Quinn Ewers — Maxwell, O’Brien Award

The Maxwell Award is presented annually to the nation’s best player, and Ewers is one of 16 semifinalists. He was also named a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. In seven starts this season, Ewers has completed 69% of his passes for 1,722 yards with 19 touchdowns.

During their time at Texas, Tommy Nobis (1965), Ricky Williams (1998), Vince Young (2005) and Colt McCoy (2009) all won the Maxwell Award. Bijan Robinson was also a semifinalist in 2022.

Jahdae Barron, Anthony Hill Jr. — Bednarik Award

The Longhorns had two players among the 20 semifinalists for the award presented to the nation’s best defensive player. Together, they lead a defensive unit that leads the nation in passing yards allowed (135.3) and second in total defense (251.0).

Barron has played in 50 career games and was named a Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist on Oct. 29. He’s started all nine games this season and leads the Horns with three interceptions and seven pass break-ups.

Hill was also named a semifinalist for the Butkus Award for the nation’s best linebacker. He is Texas’ leading tackler this season with 66 stops and has a team-high 17 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks.

Michael Taaffe — Burlsworth Trophy

Taaffe is one of 10 semifinalists for an award given to the most outstanding player who started as a walk-on. The Westlake product has played in 36 career games and now has 19 starts. Taaffe has 115 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, one sack and four career interceptions. He’s one of the key leaders on the defense this season.

This trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth who started as a walk-on at Arkansas and worked his way up to being an All-American and NFL draft pick.

Texas offensive line — Joe Moore Award

The Longhorns had a stated goal of winning the Moore Award this season, and now the unit is one of 10 semifinalists for the coveted honor of nation’s best offensive line. The group has utilized the same five starters all season long — Kelvin Banks Jr., Hayden Conner, Jake Majors, DJ Campbell and Cam Williams (left to right).

This season, Texas ranks ninth in team passing efficiency (166.3) and total offense (465.2) and 10th in passing offense (301.1) and scoring (38.9). Banks, Majors and Williams have all earned SEC offensive lineman of the week honors as well.
